Bicheno Owl Finches
(Poephila bichenovi)
Australian Grassfinch
Size: 3 1/2”

Bicheno Owls get their nickname from their miniature barn owl appearance. Although small in size they’ll capture your heart with their owl like kitten-calls and active lifestyles. Owls are native to Australia. Also known as the Double Barred Finch. There are two distinct subspecies, the white rumped and the black rumped. Most Owls purchased in the US are white rumped as the black rumped are very rare. Diet: finch seed, greens, fruit, veggies, boiled egg, mealworms occassionally, millet sprays.

Bicheno Owls are hardy, active, & peaceful finches. They are fast fliers. They prefer a large aviary but a flight cage is adequate housing for a pair. They are flighty and easily frightened so a quiet spot for the cage is a must. Owls love to bath so do be sure to give baths freguently and enjoy the ‘splash party’.

Owls are usually good breeders if given a quiet nesting area with good lighting. Wicker or plastic nest boxes can be used, plastic being my personal choice as they are less apt to get tangled in the nest. Eggs: 4 to 6 small white eggs, incubation starting after last egg is laid, 14 days to hatching, fledging around 18 days.
