Cock: Green back, red, black, or yellow head, pale beak, chest bright purple or white, underparts yellow fading to white toward rump. Tail dark tapered medium length. Male sings and dances a funny bebop dance for female or any passerby's who take his fancy. Song is very soft but pleasant to hear. Males will wing-flutter to attack attention along with the dance.
Hen: Green back, red, black, or yellow head, pale beak, chest lavender or white, underparts pale yellow fading to white toward rump. Tail dark tapered medium length. Female does not have a song but has a sharp call. Females also wing-flutter to attack a mate.
Diet: Finch seed mix, spray millet, greens, vegetables, fruit, soak seed and sprouts, boiled egg, softfood supplements. Free choice grit, crushed charcoal and cuttlebone. Feed a good quality rearing softfood, spray millet, and boiled egg along with their seed diet during chick rearing.
Breeding: Enclosed plastic or wooden nest box or large wicker nest. Building materials: Dried grasses, coconut fiber, wood chips. Eggs: 4 - 6 white. Incubate: 14 - 16 days. Fledge at 18 to 20 days.
Fledge: 16 - 18 days. Fledglings are a dull olive gray and are slow to obtain their full adult colors.
