Cordon Bleus - Comparison of the Blue-capped and Red Cheeked

I thought a comparison of the Red Cheeked  Blue Capped Cordons would be a good informational page to add to my site as the hens are very hard to tell apart. Blue-capped cocks and hens normally sit upright on the perch whereas the Red-Cheeked pairs will sit lower.

Blue Capped Cordon Bleu

Red Cheeked Cordon Bleu

Cock:  Soft brown back, wings, and top of the head, sky blue face, chest, and sides. Red cheek patch and  waxy rose-red beak, under parts chestnut-brown. Red Cheeks get their name from the cocks red cheek patch. Tail dark medium length., legs flesh colored.

Hen: Similar but softer blue, no red cheek patch. Under parts fade from chestnut to off white. The Red Cheek hen’s brown forehead extends to the top of the beak. Tail slightly shorter than Blue capped hen.

Cock:  Soft brown back, wings, sky blue head, nape, chest, and sides, under parts chestnut-brown. Waxy rose-red beak. Tail dark medium long., legs flesh colored. Slightly larger than the Red Cheeked cock.

Hen: Similar but softer blue, top of head soft brown. Under parts fade from chestnut to off white. The Blue Capped hen’s brown forehead fades to blue against the beak. Slightly larger than the Red Cheek hen, forehead more rounded. Also the Blue capped hens normally sit up straighter on the perch than the Red Cheeked hens.
